How much do I need to fundraise to take part in a World Vision Challenge?
Each challenge, unless stated otherwise, requires participants to fundraise $6000. In return for your fundraising World Vision will send you to a World Vision project to see first-hand how your fundraising will make a serious difference in a needy community. Your reservation deposit is your personal commitment to your fundraising of the challenge.
Will people think I am just trying to get a cheap holiday?
We hope not! The World Vision Challenges are not holidays in the traditional sense. You will be training for the months prior to your event to get fit, raising thousands of dollars for World Vision New Zealand’s projects, and then undertaking a real physical challenge. All of these elements take time, effort and commitment. However you may feel more comfortable including a personal contribution to your fundraising target. Whatever you choose, World Vision Charity Challenges are not easy. They are designed to be an enormously rewarding experience that will most likely change your life.
How can I raise the money?
Raising funds is one of the most rewarding parts of the challenge. As many past participants have proved it’s not only possible to reach the fundraising target, but people often exceed it* and come back to do another challenge! You will be provided with proven fundraising ideas to get you started and support along the way.
*If you do exceed the required amount, the excess will be directly applied to the World Vision project your trip is supporting.
How will my fundraising help the work of World Vision?
The money you fundraise for the World Vision Cambodia Cycle Challenge will contribute to a much-needed water and sanitation project in the community of Koh Andaet. This is the same community that you will visit on the challenge. Currently there is little access to safe drinking water in the community with diarrhoea, typhoid and parasites being common. You will see first-hand why this project is vital to the health and well-being of those in this community.
Do I have to fundraise or can I simply choose to pay the total amount myself?
Fundraising is a challenging and rewarding part of taking part in a charity challenge. You do however have the option to pay the target amount outright, in instalments up until the deadline; or even combine your contribution with fundraising.
What happens if I don't reach the fundraising total in time?
Reaching the fundraising total is an important part of the challenge for one particularly important reason. World Vision New Zealand has made a commitment to Koh Andaet that we will reach the established target, which the community is counting on to complete the potentially life-saving project. It is important that in committing to the challenge, you create a plan to reach the total amount. Both World Vision and Intrepid Travel are available for support and advice as you embark on your fundraising ventures. Remember fundraising may be a challenge but it can also be a lot of fun.
Can I visit my sponsored child in Cambodia? How would this work? Would I need to extend the trip?
Yes you can definitely visit your sponsored child in Cambodia. You will need to notify World Vision of your desire to do this a minimum of three months prior to the trip departure. World Vision will then provide you with paperwork to complete and will notify you of the process involved. Your trip will need to be extended for an additional 1-2 days to accommodate this sponsor visit. You will also need to contact Intrepid three months before the departure date to confirm and pay for these trip extensions.
Will I hear back about the difference the money I raised made in Cambodia?
Yes. World Vision will send you an annual update on the progress of the community visited for the following year. It is deeply rewarding to hear of how your fundraising translates into improved living standards for the poor. You also have the option to begin sponsoring a child from the Koh Andaet community. This is a distinctly personal way to remain connected to the community you visit.
Are donations tax deductible?
Yes. Donations over $5 are eligible for a tax rebate. A receipt will be sent to you when we have received your donation. In fact, as of April 2008 people who donate to charity will be able to claim back up to 33.3 per cent of their annual net income.
