By sponsoring a child, you've helped Gajapati grow.
Water + Health
More than 2400 Gajapati families, including almost 4000 children, now enjoy access to clean and safe drinking water, after the installation of 102,219m of pipeline to villages, and the renovation of traditional water sources. Other great news is that no new cases of malaria have been reported in the last four years, thanks to an effective malaria intervention programme.
Education
Poverty, illiteracy and long walking distances to school used to lead to a high dropout rate in high schools. Thanks to significant improvements in the education system, almost 5000 children in Gajapati now attend school. Over the past year, 1006 high school pupils, 445 of whom were girls, successfully sat their exams.
Empowerment
World Vision has supported the community with leadership and management training, and the establishment of more than 500 community organisations. The organisations include about 300 self-help savings groups, which enable members to run small businesses. There are also 67 child protection committees, 57 children’s clubs and 52 youth clubs to ensure the wellbeing of children.
Gajapati's Journey (graph)
"“We are thankful to World Vision New Zealand sponsors for their uninterrupted support despite the global economic crisis, which has been a motivational force for the World Vision India team to serve the community meaningfully."
Subharansu Kumar Naik, World Vision Gajapati Programme Manager
July 2010

The people of Gajapati may not know you by name, but they will never forget what you’ve done for them.

Like your sponsored child has grown, Gajapati has also grown in independence and confidence. Now, the people are ready to take ownership of their own community development projects, marking the end to a wonderful journey with World Vision. Thanks to the generous support of about 3000 compassionate New Zealanders, like you, the lives of 52,000 people have been transformed over the past 17 years.

Emergence of Hope

Tabarsing is a beautiful tribal village in Gajapati. Back in 2000, though, the community struggled with food shortages, and most of the women and children were either malnourished or anaemic. With the help of World Vision, land was renovated, and dams and irrigation canals were constructed. Agricultural cultivation has tripled over the past decade. Nowadays, the community is no longer hungry, migration has been reduced and the children are all at school. The community says: "Because of World Vision, our community has been transformed."
