How much does the Kilimanjaro Trek cost?
The Kilimanjaro Trek costs $8000. This cost covers all major costs including flights, accommodation and Kilimanjaro climb/park fees as well as a donation component that will contribute to World Vision’s work in the Tanzanian community of Magugu.
How much of this total goes to World Vision?
Approximately $1200 of your total trip cost will contribute to the work of World Vision.
How can I raise the money?
Raising funds to help the people of Magugu is one of the most rewarding parts of the challenge. As many past participants have proved it’s not only possible to reach the fundraising target, but people often exceed it* and come back to do another challenge! You will be provided with proven fundraising ideas to get you started and support along the way.
*If you do exceed the required amount, the excess will be directly applied to the World Vision project your trip is supporting.
Will people think I am just trying to get a cheap holiday?
We hope not! The World Vision Challenges are not holidays in the traditional sense. You will be training for the months prior to your event to get fit, raising vital dollars for a World Vision project, and then undertaking a real physical challenge. All of these elements take time, effort and commitment. World Vision Charity Challenges are not easy. They are designed to be an enormously rewarding experience that will most likely change your life.
How will the donation component of the trip cost help the work of World Vision?
The money you fundraise for the World Vision Kilimanjaro Trek will contribute to a much-needed water project in the community of Magugu. This is the same community that you will visit on the challenge. Currently there is little access to safe drinking water in Magugu. You will see first-hand why this project is vital to the health and wellbeing of those in this community.
Do I have to fundraise the donation component or can I simply choose to pay this part of the trip cost myself?
It’s up to you. Fundraising is a challenging and rewarding part of taking part in a charity challenge. You do however have the option to pay the target amount outright, in instalments up until the deadline; or even combine your contribution with fundraising.
What happens if I don't reach the required total in time?
Reaching the target amount is an important part of the challenge for two reasons. The first being the high cost of the travel-related costs. World Vision must receive the target amount prior to the challenge in order to meet deadlines for flight payments and Intrepid land costs.
Secondly, World Vision New Zealand has made a commitment to Magugu that we will reach the established fundraising target, which the community is counting on to complete the enormously important water project. It is important that in committing to the challenge, you create a plan to reach the total amount.
Both World Vision and Intrepid Travel are available for support and advice as you embark on your fundraising ventures. Remember fundraising may be a challenge but it can also be a lot of fun.
Can I visit my sponsored child in Tanzania? How would this work? Would I need to extend the trip?
Yes you can definitely visit your sponsored child in Tanzania. You will need to notify World Vision of your desire to do this a minimum of three months prior to the trip departure. World Vision will then provide you with paperwork to complete and will notify you of the process involved. Your trip will need to be extended for an additional 1-2 days to accommodate this sponsor visit. You will also need to contact Intrepid three months before the departure date to confirm and pay for these trip extensions.
Will I hear back about the difference the money I raised made in Tanzania?
Yes. World Vision will send you an annual update on the progress of the community visited for the following year. It is deeply rewarding to hear of how your fundraising translates into improved living standards for the poor. You also have the option to begin sponsoring a child from the Magugu community. This is a distinctly personal way to remain connected to the community you visit.
Are donations tax deductible?
The donation component of your trip cost will be tax deductible.
