Haiti Earthquake Emergency |
World Vision has raised more than a million dollars for Haiti as New Zealanders continue to show their generosity two weeks on from the devastating earthquake.
The relief agency’s appeal total now stands at $1,003,000 following an outpouring of support from Kiwis moved by the plight of the three million affected Haitians.
Director of International Programmes for World Vision New Zealand Seth Le Leu said: “This is an incredible effort from New Zealanders especially just after Christmas when people are traditionally feeling the pinch and following a year of recession.”
And this is not the first time Kiwis have shown concern for those in urgent need around the world. New Zealanders have a history of generosity and punching above their weight when it comes to responding to emergencies.

World Vision is an expert in delivering emergency relief and working in partnership with communities for several years following large-scale disasters to effect long-term rehabilitation and disaster preparedness.
“This earthquake has caused major devastation, in a New Zealand context it would be like having to rebuild everything from Lake Taupo to Cape Reinga so it is clear we will be working with the people of Haiti, helping them to rebuild their lives, for at least the next four to five years,” explained Le Leu.
“That’s why the money donated by New Zealanders so far and the funds still coming in are so crucial.”
Since January 12 World Vision, which was one of the first agencies on the ground, has been supplying families in Port-au-Prince with rations of water, food, and other emergency items including hygiene kits, tarps, blankets and water containers as well as setting up mobile clinics and providing urgently needed medical supplies to hospitals.
Children are always a main focus of Word Vision's response in any disaster, and in Haiti Child-Friendly Spaces have now been set up where youngsters can rest, play and begin to have psychological trauma addressed in a safe environment.
An operations center on the Dominican Republic border at Jimani is also working to help support the influx of homeless Haitians fleeing to that area and longer-term plans are being put in place.
To support World Vision’s work, people are asked to continue lending a hand by making a donation on 0800 80 2000 or pledging $30 through their Telecom account by phoning 0900 4 HOPE. Alternatively contributions can be made online at www.worldvision.org.nz or at any Westpac branch.
