Kiwis are continuing to lend a hand as World Vision's Appeal for Haiti nears the half million mark

As of midday, over NZD$480,000 had been generously donated to support emergency relief operations.

World Vision's response update:

World Vision's relief efforts have gathered momentum, distributing emergency supplies to assist tens of thousands of families affected by the devastating 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010.

Airlifts have landed carrying tonnes of emergency and medical supplies. More flights are expected to arrive in the coming days.

The emergency supplies have been immediately assembled into kits for distribution to thousands of families in need, including items such as tarpaulins for temporary shelter, blankets, hygiene kits, water containers and medical supplies.

World Vision is also distributing food aid to 93,000 beneficiaries in South East Port au Prince.

Medical supplies have been distributed to 11 hospitals and health centres from World Vision's pre-positioned stocks. World Vision's volunteers and mobile clinic are also providing triage medical assistance for the injured.

World Vision's response priorities continue to focus on child protection (including education) and addressing basic needs such as: water and sanitation, shelter, food and medical assistance.

World Vision is focussing relief operations in the neighbourhoods of Petion-ville, Tugreau, Delmas, St. Martin in Port au Prince. Due to earthquake survivors flooding into neighbouring provinces outside of Port au Prince, relief operations are also running in Jimani and Fonparisien.

To support World Vision's work, people are asked to lend a hand by calling 0800 80 2000, making a donation to the 'World Vision Haiti Emergency' at any Westpac branch, or pledging $30 through their Telecom account by phoning 0900 4 HOPE. Alternatively contributions can be made online at www.worldvision.org.nz.
