Munna: Food for thought
In 16-year-old Munna's village chillies are drying everywhere
including on the roofs of houses. Women and children are streaming
back from the fields with boxes of tomatoes on their heads and
decorated tractors are being driven out in anticipation of a
successful harvest. All this is cause for great celebration.
The remote community of Khari, 45kms from the nearest city, is
situated in India's central drought belt and there was a time when
villagers struggled to grow any crops here at all, which meant they
often went hungry.
Today, a dam built by World Vision is benfitting 12 villages
like Munna's and helping more than 1,000 families to irrigate their
land, grow diverse crops and provide nutritious food for their
children all year round. Munna and his friends are happy to help
their parents in the fields - they know they are the lucky ones who
will reap the long-term benefits of these agricultural
improvements. And as a result Munna's horizons are also expanding
and he is now hoping to complete school and go on to college.
For Munna the nearest school is 12kms away and used to be a long
walk but not anymore - World Vision has provided a bike for him and
all the other children in the village helping them pedal ever
closer to fulfilling their potential.
