Sonali: Broader horizons

The eyes of Twelve-year-old Sonali light up when she talks about a recent visit to the museum with the World Vision Children Club. This young girl from Salve Nagar slum in Mumbai has learnt to become excited about expanding her horizons.

Sonali is growing up in a tiny house, squeezed in behind one of the huge pipes which bring water in to the city. The one-roomer, which is barely an arm span in width, would have started off as a tarpaulin tent when her parents first moved to Mumbai for work 15 years ago. Today, it is a more permanent structure used by Sonali, her mum, dad and older brother as a kitchen, living room and bedroom - there is notably no bathroom.

For Sonali, the neighbourhood is her playground and she loves running along the water pipes with her friends and playing bat and ball in the lane outside her home. But it is a good education that is her ticket to a better life and something that would not have been possible for her without the support of her Kiwi World Vision sponsor.

She is making the most of the opportunity and doing well at school - in fact one day she hopes to become a teacher so that she can help other children fulfill their potential.

To help other children like Sonali receive the education and other basics they deserve please call 0800 800 776 or go to worldvision.org.nz and sponsor a child.
