Lisa Cescon, Chief Executive Officer of New Zealand’s largest aid agency, World Vision, is pleased with the removal of the rebate limits on charitable donations announced in the Budget today.
The $1890 rebate threshold on charitable donations made by individuals and the 5 per cent deduction limit on company donations will be scrapped, a move Miss Cescon says shows the Government’s appreciation and understanding of the good work of charitable organisations.
“It shows the Government recognises the importance of the charitable sector and the contribution it makes both to New Zealand society and to our status as a good global citizen,” she says.
Miss Cescon says with 80% of World Vision’s funding coming from private donations, the budget move sends an encouraging message to generous New Zealanders.
“It will certainly encourage people to give more, knowing they will get more of a tax rebate. It may mean more opportunities for charities to benefit from Foundations and Trusts, as well as from individuals and companies. This latest action of the Government will potentially enable charities to achieve even more in meeting both domestic and global needs,” says Miss Cescon.
