World Vision one of the first on the scene in Peru

World Vision emergency relief distributions have begun in Peru following last Thursday's devastating earthquake.

A team flew into Ica, one of the worst-hit areas of Peru, Friday morning (New Zealand time) and delivered aid supplies to many of the now homeless families.

Jose Luis Ochoa, World Vision emergency team leader, said the situation in Ica, population 700,000, is particularly concerning because the destruction is so extensive, and damaged roads are hampering access.

"Plus, we still have the problem of communication," he added.

The earthquake, which was 8.0 on the Richter scale, killed about 500 people and left thousands homeless.

Families have been given blankets as they prepare to face another night in front of their destroyed houses to avoid falling debris from the aftershocks that continue to be felt.

A load of supplies, including medicines, shoes, warm clothing, blankets, soap and towels arrived in Ica on Friday afternoon (New Zealand time), and more trucks are on their way.

The Peruvian government has sent food, clothing, water and tents but World Vision says there is an urgent need for more. A lack of electricity, water and phone lines is adding to the chaotic aftermath.
