World Vision thanks New Zealand Cricket | | | |
January 7, 2008
Donations made at the two New Zealand Cricket Twenty20 matches held on December 23 at Seddon Park, Hamilton will help survivors of Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh rebuild their lives.
The New Zealand Under-19 team lost their match against a Masters XI including New Zealand Cricket CEO Justin Vaughan, Adam Parore and Dion Nash. A New Zealand XI captained by Stephen Fleming then fell to Bangladesh later in the day.
World Vision New Zealand’s Bangladesh Cyclone appeal received more than $4,500 in donations from cricket supporters on the day. Donations were collected from the crowd by World Vision volunteers and were also accepted by phone.

World Vision New Zealand CEO Lisa Cescon says the money will go a long way in Bangladesh.
“Sometimes it’s hard for Kiwis to comprehend how far that money will go, but I can tell you it will make an enormous difference in the lives of those devastated by the recent cyclone in Bangladesh. Aside from these generous donations, we also received many enquiries from people who want to sponsor a child in Bangladesh. This wouldn’t have been possible without New Zealand Cricket’s support of the work we do.”
When Cyclone Sidr struck on November 15, seven World Vision programmes lay in its path. Two of the worst affected are funded entirely by World Vision New Zealand.
“That means it is up to us to raise the money to help the people in those two programme areas get back on their feet,” says Miss Cescon.

“We have already raised around $300,000 from our generous supporters, which is a wonderful example of New Zealanders’ desire to help others at Christmas time. However our aim is to raise $500,000, so we still have some way to go. Cyclone Sidr set these communities back 10 years and they desperately need our help.”
