Laos: WV Typhoon Ketsana preparedness plans
30th September 2009

Donate NowAs Typhoon Ketsana approaches and is predicted to hit early morning local time on Wednesday, Sept 30, WV Laos is concerned about possible flooding and landslides, especially in upland areas and also in populated areas along the rivers.

Damage to crops is as serious a prospect as damage to homes and roads, as the rice harvest is fast approaching.  Secondary effects of the storm may come in the form of a food shortage in the next few months

WV Laos has started deploying communications staff to the provinces most likely to be affected including, Savannakhet, Khammouane, and Bolikhamxay provinces. Photos and updates of the impact will be posted to wvrelief as the situation unfolds.

World Vision Laos does not have an in-country relief reserve, but are alerting SOs to potential immediate funding needs.

WV Laos is taking the following steps to prepare staff and communities for the potentially massive impact of the storm.

  1. WV Laos Provincial staff teams are working with local government in their areas to alert villages to take needed precautions, most especially for the beneficiaries and the children. Evacuations are possible but none are confirmed yet.
  2. National staff are now assigned to relocate to provinces in small teams to support provincial staff preparations and response.  This will include plans and actions as needed to buy rice, clothing, water tablets, blankets and basic foods locally and transport these to affected areas.
  3. Support offices are being contacted to provide information about the approaching storm, possible effects, and approval to mobilize resources ahead of the storm's arrival.
  4. Provincial response teams will not only alert and assist villages to prepare for the storm, but will also create contingency plans for rapid response to affected areas.  These areas may be anywhere inside the province, not only in ADPs.
  5. We have advised all staff to stay in safe places and take precautionary measures for themselves and their families.
  6. We have opened dialogues with other INGOs, UN organizations, and GoL regarding their support and collaboration. Donate Now
