Cambodia: WV assists Typhoon Ketsana evacuees

Donate NowAs dark clouds linger and rain continues to fall, World Vision has sent its rapid assessment teams to northern Cambodia to survey the damage. 

The typhoon swept across Kampong Thom province killing 9 people, injuring 11. Some 37 houses were destroyed and 283 homes reported damaged.

Sandan district, the worst affected area in Kampong Thom Province, has reported more than 1, 400 families homes flooded in water 1 meter high. World Vision has two ADPs in Kampong Thom Province.

A total of 298 children were affected in World Vision’s ADP areas including 82 children from the Sponsorship programme, however all families in World Vision’s communities are accounted for. In response to the floods, World Vision is providing health education and chlorine tablets in cooperation with the government’s district’s health staff to children and their families.

In a separate ADP - Prasath Sambor – two homes collapsed and two registered children and their familes moved to shelter at the World Vision children’s club. World Vision Cambodia has assisted offers the family with 50 kilograms of rice, 20 fish cans, and 1 tend. 

The government has prepared rubber boats to evacuate the villagers if the flood water continues to rise.  People have been encouraged to move to higher grounds. Almost 200 livestock have also moved to higher ground. 

Another prospective target village Satream village in Prasath Ballang II has also been hit by the typhoon Ketsana. 3 houses were ruined, 2 oxen were killed, and one person was injured.

So far, World Vision’s office in Sandan District is under water, about 30 centimeters.  There is a steady rain, the river is rising and the clouds are dark. Locals are waiting to see what else may come their way.Donate Now
