17 December 2002
The Ethiopian Government this month launched an international appeal for food aid to donor governments, UN agencies, and other aid organisations, after receiving the results of an assessment made by aid agencies, including World Vision.
The assessment indicated more than 11 million people in Ethiopia need emergency assistance in 2003.
Total food aid need was estimated at 1.5 million metric tonnes.
The appeal was officially announced this month in the capital, Addis Ababa.
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told the international community thousands of deaths could be avoided if the rest of the world took the crisis seriously.
Mr Zenawi added sufficient mechanisms to deliver aid were in place to prevent famine and that all that was required was food aid.
Simon Mechale, head of the Ethiopian Government's emergency arm, said harvests were 25 per cent down on previous years
The worst hit areas were Afar, Eastern Tigray, Easter Shoa and Oromiya.
