“To prevent the spread of HIV, we need strategies that are focused on us, the young,” said Kevin Ariel Alvares, age 13, during an HIV-prevention event at his secondary school.
Kevin’s home country, Honduras, has the highest incidence of HIV in Central America, mainly concentrated in the capital city. While few of Kevin’s peers visit urban centres, their community’s location near the border with El Salvador means people from El Salvador and Honduras regularly pass through the area. Such international routes are strongly linked to the spread of HIV.
World Vision is working with other organisations in Honduras and El Salvador to halt the spread of HIV. Carefully designed events in schools combine with education to the wider community.
“Generally, young people like us do not fully understand the risks we are exposing ourselves to,” says Jose Wilmer Maldonado, 17. As a result of his training, Jose is able to answer quick-fire questions about HIV and AIDS and how to prevent the spread. The programme goes further than just explaining HIV prevention – it also looks at social and cultural norms that contribute to the risk.
