Some achievements of Dahod ADP in the past year:
|
|
Gully plugging - a watershed management technique.
|
- Held four watershed management workshops for 300 drought-affected farmers. The ADP also organised a follow-up field visit to a demonstration plot so the farmers could see the theory put into practice.
- Organised 10 field trips for a total of 550 farmers to a national horticulture training facility and an agricultural university.
- Held six agricultural workshops for 400 farmers. Participants learnt about aspects of dairy farming, cash cropping and fertiliser use, among other topics.
- Held monthly health awareness programmes that covered a variety of topics, including hygiene, nutrition, pre- and post-natal care and vaccination.
- Organised three mobile clinics, focusing on tuberculosis, eye checks and general health check-ups. The clinics dealt with 1200 clients, referring any needing further treatment to government hospitals.
- Provided school uniforms for more than 2000 children. Parents paid Rs. 10/- (about 33 NZ cents) per uniform as their contribution.
- Provided financial assistance to nine applicants who wanted to start small grocery shops in their villages.
- Paid for six young people to attend driving training. Two of the trainees got jobs as cleaners cum drivers after the three-week course. Their new skills will help the other four to find employment.
- Organised a youth camp for 130 young people.
- Built a water tank in Rehtiya village that benefits 40 families and deepened 45 wells in other villages.
- Organised a ‘healthy baby’ competition, which was split into three categories: 0-3 years, 4-6 years and 7-10 years. Prizes were awarded based on children’s weight, height and general health and hygiene. The competition is an opportunity to teach parents about children’s health issues.
- Assisted the government polio immunisation campaign by raising awareness of the scheme and publicising the dates of immunisation.
- Organised events around World AIDS Day, including a children’s poster competition. The events raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and give people the opportunity to ask questions about the disease.
