Good news from India

We have some good news to share with you about the Girideep Area Development Programme (ADP).

Community meetings are important for
raising awareness of health issues.

An ADP is a phased programme that covers a sizeable geographic area over a period of time. As communities begin to reach their goals and are able to fund initiatives on their own, World Vision gradually decreases its financial help by reducing the number of sponsored children in those communities.

The good news is that after many years of hard work, the Girideep community has the capacity to continue their development work without World Vision New Zealand’s direct help.

This report lists the ways that the people of Girideep have been helped over the past few years, changes that have made such a difference to people’s lives, bringing them hope for the future.

During the past few years, World Vision’s Girideep ADP has:

    Health
  • Immunised children and provided them with deworming and vitamin A tablets
  • Educated community members about hygiene and diarrhoea prevention
  • Educated mothers of young children about child care, primary healthcare, breast-feeding, birth registration and family spacing
  • Trained health workers and traditional birth attendants in pre and post-natal care
  • Held workshops for teenagers about puberty, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, HIV and AIDS
  • Held healthy home competitions to reduce the incidence of disease
  • Constructed drinking water tanks, protected wells and provided water filters
  • Constructed sanitary latrines
    School uniforms and stationery, provided
    by World Vision, encourage children
    to attend school regularly.
    Education
  • Provided school uniforms and stationery for students
  • Assisted children who live in the hills to attend school by paying their hostel fees
  • Constructed classrooms and provided desks and sports equipment for schools
  • Assisted teenagers to attend vocational training courses
  • Opened adult literacy centres
    Infrastructure
  • Constructed roads and bridges connecting isolated villages with markets; as a result, transport costs have decreased and incomes increased as farmers can sell their produce at the market more frequently
    Agriculture and income-generation
  • Facilitated educational trips so farmers can learn about modern agriculture
  • Provided farm inputs and vegetable seeds
  • Set up rainwater harvesting systems for irrigation
  • Trained farmers in animal husbandry
  • Facilitated mobile veterinary clinics
  • Established fish hatcheries for fish farming
  • Assisted women’s cooperatives with their income-generating activities
    Children’s needs
  • Facilitated education trips for sponsored children
  • Formed 30 children’s clubs; typical children’s club activities include picking up rubbish, holding debates on development topics, learning about and promoting child rights and playing games
  • Established youth clubs and trained members in leadership skills
