A hand up not a hand out
Improving people’s livelihoods so they can support themselves is an important part of World Vision’s work. Mayurbhanj Area Development Programme (ADP) assists community members to set up or expand their productive activities. Here are the stories of three such community members.

Muguni making rope outside her home.

In 2001 the ADP provided a grant to help Saharai, now 26, to set up a grocery shop. A bright and educated young man, Saharai has made this business so profitable that in September 2004 he was able to purchase a motorbike and expand his business even further.
Nanadini is a widow with two children, one of whom is in the child sponsorship programme. The ADP gave her a grant of NZ$98 to set up a small business making rope from Sabai grass. Rope is a valuable commodity for farming activities in Mayurbhanj and with her profits she has been able to build a new house for her family.
A loan of NZ$65 in 2003 allowed Muguni also to set up a Sabai grass rope business. From two bulk sales of rope she has earned nearly NZ$120. As a widow and the sole provider for herself and her two children, her earnings are vital for her children’s education. Each month she sends NZ$3.50 to support one of her children who lives in another province. The child who lives at home is sponsored by a World Vision supporter in New Zealand.
