Seed idea
The greatest need of the farmers of Badkulda village was access to seeds for planting. When World Vision staff heard this, they realised they could help these farmers help themselves.
Through its Mayurbhanj Area Development Programme (ADP), World Vision brought the farmers together for agricultural and financial training. They helped them form a seed bank, which the farmers called Baitarani Gramya Bank. Each of the 43 farmers contributed NZ$2.20 to the seed fund managed by the bank and World Vision supported it with 1,760kg of groundnut (peanut) seeds.
Between them, in the first year, the farmers harvested more than 20,000kg of groundnuts. They earned an average of NZ$220 from selling the nuts, and paid NZ$42 back to the seed bank for next season – next year they plan to grow a crop of oil seeds. The success they achieved through growing groundnuts has prompted five more farmers to join the club.
Now they are organised, the farmers have approached the government agricultural extension office for more help. The farmers are all grateful to World Vision for giving them the ability to improve their own futures.
