Village plants future

The meeting was buzzing as the people of Kisandahi village excitedly discussed what their next step would be. “What about an orchard?” suggested someone.

Villagers prepare to plant their mango seedlings.
Hmm ... well, there were four acres (1.6 hectares) of community land available, the trees would help reduce soil erosion and make the village more pleasant to live in. Best of all, the trees would eventually provide fruit, which would improve the villagers’ diet and could even be sold to raise funds for further community development.

It sounded like a great idea, so exactly a fortnight later the community began planting 200 mango seedlings, which Mayurbhanj ADP supplied. People contributed animal manure for the planting project and after they had finished their day’s chores, young and old alike came out in the evenings to dig holes for the seedlings and build fences to protect them.

The seeds of the orchard idea had actually been planted a long time before, when WV Community Development Organiser, Mr Basana Lima, guided the villagers on a PLA (Participatory Learning and Action)* exercise. This helped them work out for themselves what their needs were and how they would meet them. By the time they held their meeting, the people had done ‘the learning’ and were ready for action.

It will be six or seven years before the people living in Kisandahi can enjoy the fruit of their labours, but it is a day they look forward to with great expectation. In the meantime, since they have successfully completed this project together, it is time to look around and again ask, “What’s next?”

* PLA (Participatory Learning and Action), also known as PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal), is a development-planning tool formed in the early 1990s. Through a series of PLA exercises, facilitators such as World Vision help a community assess their needs and find solutions.

From a properly completed PLA exercise, people can discover how much they really do know, what resources and skills they already have, and how resourceful they have been in the past. They can assess and analyse what has or hasn’t worked in terms of community survival and growth. Discovering what they know is an empowering experience for people who, probably for many generations, have felt downtrodden and without value. From this self-knowledge, goals can be set that build on capacities and reduce vulnerabilities.

This method is in contrast to development practice of the 1980s, when people were more passive sources of information and the facilitator tended to be the one who did most of the learning.
