Girls attend the opening day celebrations.

Banafulla Girls’ High School was established in 1993, but the school’s managing committee did not have funds to complete building classrooms. Instead, lessons were held at a cramped building rented from the Government.
The committee approached World Vision for help and received NZ$9500 towards construction expenses. The new classrooms will hold 805 students. New Zealanders sponsor 100 of these girls.
World Vision India’s east zone associate director, Mr Franklin Joseph, officially opened the new building on 5 February 2003. Dedicating the school to the people of Rangamatia village, Mr. Joseph highlighted the significance of girls’ education saying, “Girls should be given equal opportunity in all aspects of life. They should be empowered to stand on their own in society.”
One ninth-grader’s comment neatly summed up the students’ excitement on the long-awaited opening day: “Now I can sit comfortably as there is enough space in this new building. I am happy to have this school in our village.”
