Some of Mayurbhanj ADP’s activities since October 2001:

Mobile health clinics bring treatment and advice.
Health
  • Organised 11 mobile health clinics, reaching more than 2500 families with medical advice and treatment. Paid for emergency treatment for 260 patients.
  • Built 34 wells to improve access to safe drinking water.
  • Built 34 pit latrines. Awareness of the need for better sanitation has prompted several families to build their own latrines without WV assistance.
  • Supplied tile roofing for 34 families. Their damaged thatch roofing leaked when it rained, putting their health at risk.
  • Supplied mosquito nets to 765 families.

Education & skills training

  • Provided uniform fabric to 1400 children and study materials to 2300 children.
  • Subsidised driving/mechanical training for 25 people.
  • Built a hostel kitchen at Kalapathar High School and repaired buildings at another high school.

Income generation

  • Assisted Self-Help Groups (SHG) with loans to establish small businesses such as goat breeding, rice and sabai grass cultivation, selling leaf plates, shoemaking, stationery and grocery shops, tailoring, oil processing, cycle repair and rickshaw transport. There are 131 SHG in Mayurbhanj ADP – 25 male, 101 female and five mixed.

Infrastructure

  • Carried out various public works with contributions from the Indian Government. The works included constructing ponds, culverts and drainage systems, repairing check dams and building roads. (A check dam is a dam usually a couple of metres high across a small stream. They hold back monsoon rainwater, allowing time for it to restock the water table.)

Agriculture & environment

  • Provided two water pump sets and six sprayer machines, and built two wells to improve agricultural production.
  • Supplied 200 mango tree seedlings to establish an orchard in Kisandahi village.
