Some of Mayurbhanj ADP’s achievements in the past year:

Students received school uniforms .
  • Organised two AIDS awareness events to mark World AIDS Day. At both events, the ADP distributed pamphlets and organised street plays to communicate messages about the causes and consequences of the disease.
  • Helped build water-sealed toilets in six villages. Improved sanitation keeps roadsides clean, enhancing health and the environment. “Previously it was difficult to get into these villages, especially during rainy days, without a handkerchief pressed to your nose!” say ADP staff.
  • Gave tiles to 10 families so they could replace dilapidated thatched roofs. One of the recipients, Gobardhan Naik, said, “I am a small-scale farmer, with a few plots of land. I had no money to re-thatch my house. Whatever straw I got from the land was not even enough for my cattle. My family was suffering because of the collapsed roof. Now that problem is gone forever. I am happy to have a good house to live in. I am thankful to World Vision for the support.”
  • Distributed 59 first aid kits to villages. The ADP provided first aid and primary health care training for 85 ‘animators’ and health volunteers. (Animators are community members who receive a small remuneration for organising community meetings, holding small training sessions on health, agriculture etc., and liasing between the community and World Vision.)
  • Helped build nine ponds, 19 shallow wells and 19 tubewells. The ADP also constructed concrete platforms around 29 wells, to keep well areas clean.
  • Helped install a piped irrigation scheme in Sankuldhia village, which irrigates six hectares of land. Most of the village’s farmers will now be able to cultivate crops year-round, which will improve their incomes and remove the need for seasonal migration and child labour.
  • Held a workshop for 130 farmers. Topics included irrigation, weed control, crop diseases and pests, horticulture, floriculture, produce marketing and eligibility for government subsidy schemes.
  • Provided students with uniforms, exercise books and textbooks.
  • Provided rice, clothing and towels to 14 families whose homes and belongings were lost in a fire in Khandia village. (The government replaced the houses.)
