The following are some further achievements in Mayurbhanj ADP since October 2003:
|
Indian Government-provided mosquito nets protect community members from malaria.
|
Health and sanitation
- Held a meeting to educate 90 local health volunteers about malaria prevention, treatment and the use of mosquito nets.
- Distributed 1,157 government-provided mosquito nets to 576 families.
- Held two clinics for children with disabilities, attended by 14 children. Obtained a wheelchair for one child through government sources and helped other children get hearing aids and undergo plastic surgery.
- Immunised 1,765 children and provided vitamin A to 1,150 children in association with the government health department.
- Administered rehydration treatment to 92 people suffering from diarrhoea.
- Provided pre-natal care to 303 women through village health care centres.
- Trained over 200 women on topics including pre- and post-natal care, newborn care, family planning, malnourishment, diarrhoea management, child rights, prevention of child marriage and overcoming superstitions.
- Held HIV/AIDS awareness meetings for 1,796 people on World AIDS Day and an HIV/AIDS prevention speech contest for children.
- Constructed 13 open wells and 26 well platforms to provide safe drinking water for 336 families. The platforms protect wells from being contaminated by rain, run-off or germs and make it easier for women and children to draw water.
Education
- Provided school uniforms to 2,118 children and textbooks to six and supported 40 children with hostel fees.
- Held 58 after school homework centres in five communities. Nearly 3,000 children attended the centres.
- Enrolled 12 young people in vocational education.
Justice
- Encouraged parents to register 167 newborns for birth certificates.
Agriculture and food security
- Constructed a water pipeline to irrigate 10 acres of land, a canal to irrigate 30 acres, five irrigation wells to irrigate 30 acres, an irrigation pond to irrigate 40 acres and a water diversion to irrigate 30 acres in the summer and 50 acres in the rainy season. More than 240 families benefited from these projects.
- Levelled 4.42 acres of land. Because this land can be irrigated it will increase crop yields for 28 families.
- Formed a farmers club and elected officers. The aim of this club is to maintain the water diversion constructed by the ADP.
- Assisted families to purchase agricultural equipment such as bullock carts, bullocks, dairy cows, and a water pump.
- Supplied 350kg of groundnut seed to eight farmers. Their cumulative harvest totalled more than 2,410kg.
- Trained 23 farmers in the cultivation of green gram, a sprout-like green vegetable commonly used in Indian cookery. Provided 172kg of green gram seeds to 20 farmers.
Relief
- Provided relief, including food, cooking utensils and clothing to 14 families who lost their homes to fire.
Children’s club activities
- Formed two new children’s clubs.
- Dug 20 metres of drains to direct stagnant water away from school premises and protect students from mosquitoes and malaria.
- Purchased a bucket and two brooms with money they collected.
- Applied to the village development committee to purchase a blackboard for their homework centre.
- Built a wooden bridge over a water reservoir, making it easier to fetch water.
