Out-of-school young people learn income-
generating skills through the tailoring centre.
Achievements
Recently, Mayurbhanj Area Development Programme (ADP) has:
    Health and sanitation
  • Held community meetings to increase awareness of malaria, and distributed 625 insecticide-treated mosquito nets
  • Facilitated mobile health clinics to visit villages
  • Celebrated World AIDS Day to increase community awareness of HIV and AIDS
  • Held meetings for 60 teenage girls to teach them about personal hygiene, sexual health and care of babies
  • Constructed 14 platforms around wells to prevent contamination

  • Education
  • Provided uniforms for 3,200 students and school bags for 3,000 students
  • Supported 217 children with hostel fees so they could go to school, and provided 200 students with bicycles
  • Renovated 12 community coaching centres
  • Constructed five playgrounds

  • Agricultural and economic development
  • Trained 460 farmers in sustainable agricultural practices and cash crop cultivation
  • Trained 20 farmers to grow ginger as a cash crop
  • Supplied groundnut seed to a farmers’ club for a demonstration of a cash crop
  • Facilitated farmers’ clubs to access government assistance for seed and rice processing machines
  • Provided seed for farmers to cultivate sabai grass on their waste land; sabai grass is made into rope which is a common source of income in the Gajapati community
  • Levelled hilly land for 47 families to use as fields
  • Provided 243 goats for families to breed and sell
  • Assisted young people from one village to establish a milk collection centre to supply milk to a co-operative
  • Helped 23 families establish income-generating activities, such as brick making
  • Supported a tailoring centre where 54 teenagers are learning tailoring skills
  • Constructed a fish pond that will support fish farming by the village development committee, irrigate land belonging to 20 farmers and provide water for bathing and livestock for 85 families
  • Constructed four irrigation canals to irrigate 230 acres of land; 225 farmers benefited
  • Constructed a check dam to trap monsoon rains and a lift-irrigation system to irrigate land above the level of the water source

  • Leadership development
  • Supported 52 family forums to promote family and community harmony
  • Supported 55 children’s clubs; two child leaders have now joined their village development committees
Challenges
The people of Mayurbhanj ADP still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on combating wariness of health professionals and improving people’s health. Activities will include training first aid volunteers and traditional birth attendants, facilitating mobile health clinics and raising awareness of nutrition, malaria and HIV and AIDS.
