Mayurbhanj ADP is training farmers to grow new crops, like pumpkins

Achievements
Since October 2006, Mayurbhanj ADP has:
Health and sanitation
- Trained 582 mothers in more nutritious ways of cooking for their families
- Held an information session on preventing malaria and tuberculosis for 275 people
HIV and AIDS
- Arranged a World AIDS Day event, raising awareness of HIV and AIDS in all 13 villages; at least 1700 people took part
- Supported a group of young people in making an audio tape with an HIV and AIDS awareness message, which will be distributed to youth groups
Education
- Distributed cricket sets to 63 coaching centres
Agriculture and food security
- Trained 20 farmers in growing new crops such as watermelons and pumpkins
- Encouraged farmers to adapt two acres of land for okra production, which has grown well, giving a new source of income
Infrastructure
- Provided new flooring materials for 64 families and roofing materials for 113 families
Economic development
- Provided 20 goats to community groups for goat-rearing programmes which will provide a new source of income
- Trained 130 members of community business organisations in small business skills
Justice
- Conducted training sessions for 42 women, designed to give them the confidence to participate in their community’s development
The people of Mayurbhanj still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on improving agricultural techniques, healthcare and education facilities.
