Tractor keeps students on track

People in Kalapathar village knew the value of education, they just could not afford it. However, when the villagers borrowed a tractor and trailer from Mayurbhanj ADP late in 2001, their prospects changed.

The holiday job pays for students' college fees.
By hiring out the tractor for transport and construction work, the Village Development Committee (VDC) earned 440,000 rupees (more than $NZ1800) in the first year. Ten needy families earned a small wage by driving the tractor or by loading/unloading goods from the trailer.

The VDC allowed seven college students to have priority in the tractor work during the summer holidays. The students’ wages helped pay for their school fees and study materials. For at least four of the students, continuing their education would not have been possible without the cash they earned from their holiday job.

Kalapathar village wants to repeat the summer holiday idea again, with a desire to help more students continue their education and build a better future for themselves and their community.
