Well beyond expectations
Natabar Singh used to grow only rice on his three acres of land. But because rice cultivation requires a substantial amount of water, Natabar couldn’t maintain a stable food supply or income throughout the year.
|
Hulling rice is much easier with Natabar’s hulling machine.
|
In 2004, World Vision began construction of an irrigation well in Natabar’s village, and he helped with the digging. The well was a welcome addition to the village, offering all the local farmers the ability not only to irrigate their rice crops, but to diversify production into crops that have different growing seasons.
Natabar used the irrigation system to his own advantage by beginning to grow vegetables in the rice off-season. The vegetables improve the nutrition of his family and are eagerly bought at local market days. His vegetable business has been so successful that Natabar earns NZ$67 from each acre he cultivates.
After having saved for some time, Natabar purchased a rice-hulling machine for his own use and to rent out to his neighbours. Natabar and his neighbours have found it is much easier to hull rice mechanically, and he makes NZ$3.50 a day from it.
The impact of the well is well beyond what Natabar and his neighbours imagined when World Vision first discussed it with them.
