Hit the books

In a small, dark room 15-20 students are focused on their studies.

Alisha’s students spend their afternoons
studying in her cramped lounge room.

The room, the size of a small lounge, is a World Vision tuition centre, a focal point for children from Mumbai’s slums to get extra help with their studies.

The dedicated lady who runs these classes is Alisha, a teacher of 20 year’s experience. From 3pm-6pm every afternoon, students gather in the cramped room, which is actually the sitting room of Alisha and her sister’s home. In addition, each morning Alisha runs preschool classes to prepare young children to make the most of their schooling.

For children such as Dharam, the tuition centre is vital. Dharam’s father is too busy driving a taxi to help him with his studies and his mother cannot read. The help he gets from Alisha could make the difference between following his father into taxi driving and pursuing his dream of being a scientist.

“Schooling is very expensive,” says Alisha. It is often a stretch for families to afford to send their children to school. The World Vision tuition centre helps these students make the most of their schooling and gives them hope that they can change their futures.
