Driving the future

In the slums served by Mumbai Network of Care Project, poverty causes so many children to drop out of school. World Vision’s Network of Care Project in Mumbai is particularly concerned about the futures of such children and young people.

Mahadev and Sunil had worked hard at school and enjoyed their studies, but life in the slums of Mumbai is tough. The parents of these two friends just couldn’t afford to keep their sons at school, so they dropped out.

Project staff heard about Mahadev and Sunil during their regular attendance checks, and immediately went to visit each boy’s family. Together the families and staff planned how the project could support the teenage boys. They decided to enrol both young men in a course to teach them to drive and handle four-wheel-drive vehicles.

Since completing the course, both Mahadev and Sunil have got well-paid jobs and their salaries are making things much easier for their families. Among other things, Sunil’s means that his brother is able to continue his education to a level higher than Sunil attained. Mahadev, Sunil and their families are grateful to World Vision for giving them hope for a better future.
