Working woman
With two children at school and a husband whose weak and dislocated shoulder prevented him from working, providing for the family was left to Laxmi, who lives in Mumbai West Area Development Programme (ADP).
Laxmi is someone who actively participates in the development of her community. She is a volunteer who helps people in the slums and has attended many micro-enterprise and small business training sessions.
Laxmi is also a member of a self-help group established by World Vision. These groups of 10-12 people come together to find solutions to their problems, learn practical skills and provide support to each other.
Through her group and the training sessions she attended, Laxmi learned how to run a small business. She decided to set herself up to offer flour milling services. Her self-help group applied to World Vision for a flourmill and was accepted.
Flour milling has proven a useful business in the community, as it means people no longer have to travel miles to get their grain ground – and Laxmi now has a daily income which is enough to provide for all of her family’s needs.
