Lets go on a picnic
In New Zealand when we go on a picnic we head for the beach or the countryside. For fifty children from rural India it was much more novel to combine their first visit to Ratlam city with a picnic.
They picnicked in a park. The children enjoyed playing in the playground and took part in a drawing competition. Ratlam Area Development Programme (ADP) provided notebooks and pens as prizes for all participants in the competition.
The next stop was the railway station. After they had explored the platform, a train pulled up. The children were extremely excited to see and board an actual train.
About 100 children from three other schools took their picnic near the water tank in the jungle. There they held singing competitions, and played games.
The girls’ team won the first singing competition and were rewarded with sports materials such as volleyballs and nets and skipping ropes. Other prizes included soccer balls, cricket sets and badminton racquets which were all received excitedly.
Picnics such as these offer pleasant opportunities to take time out and enhance the project’s educational programmes.
