The road to somewhere
“Isolated” is a good word to describe Koylawat village, Ratlam District.
Although the village is only three kilometers from its market town, the absence of even a basic road made travel to market difficult. Bullock carts, an essential for agriculture in India, could not even make the journey.
Villagers say that carrying their goods on their heads through fields was time consuming and could be painful. During the rainy season streams springing up along the path made travel dangerous.
For some time villagers had unsuccessfully lobbied the district government to solve this.
A lack of roading was not the only problem in Koylawat village. In 2003-2004 Ratlam District suffered a drought. Crop failures deprived numerous families of food and income.
World Vision provided a solution to both issues through an Emergency Mitigation and Disaster Response funded by the New Zealand Government. The construction of 22 kilometers of roads throughout Ratlam area offered alternative employment to people from 10 villages including Koylawat and connected the villages to the market town.
The people of Koylawat worked for two months clearing, digging, rolling and preparing their road. When it was finally completed a huge crowd gathered to greet the World Vision jeep, the first vehicle to ever drive into their village.
