Back to school

Sonu and Mohan used to go to school, but that was until last year.

Over the previous school year their attendance had been falling, and when all the children returned to school after the summer break, Sonu and Mohan were not amongst them.

Last year their village joined with World Vision’s Ratlam Area Development Programme (ADP), and World Vision staff formed a parent-teacher association to encourage parents to send their children to school. At the beginning of the new school year the parent-teacher association met for the first time. One of the items on the agenda was an attendance report from the school teacher, who told the association that although Sonu and Mohan’s names remained on the school register, they hadn’t come back to school this term.

The teacher and members of the parent-teacher association went to visit Sonu and Mohan’s parents and found the children watching over farm animals grazing in the forest. After some discussion, their father realized the importance of sending his children to school. He promised to buy school bags and books for his children on market day and the very next morning, the boys marched off to school with their friends.

This story has a happy ending for Sona and Mohan, but there are many other children like them in Ratlam ADP. World Vision continues to work with the parent-teacher association to educate parents on the importance of educating their children.
