Now’s your chance A generous donation from New Zealand sponsors has come just in time for one young man in Blantyre Urban ADP.
Having read in a letter from Shaibu that his father, mother and an older sister had died, his sponsors Elizabeth and Frank Stark wrote back, asking Shaibu to let them know if there was anything they could do for him. Shaibu replied, probably with his heart in his mouth. ‘The thing I want and need most is for you, my sponsor, to train me how to drive or become a mechanic.’ Years before, the Starks had helped other sponsored children by donating money so the mother of one could start a fabric shop and the other could buy a cow so the family had milk to sell. ‘Would training be possible for Shaibu if we paid the cost?’ they wondered. They made some enquiries through World Vision New Zealand. It was an anxious wait for both sides, but eventually everything was organised. The Starks made their donation and Shaibu started a seven-week driving course. The donation paid for his fees, identity photo and provisional licence. There was enough left over for Shaibu to bank for future lessons. “My husband is an employer, so we know the importance of training,” says Mrs Stark. However, the Starks wanted Shaibu to know that he had his part to play as well. “I write pretty directly. We were giving him this gift so he could earn a living and make a life for himself, but he needs to be careful how he lives it. AIDS is such a big problem in his country. "Shaibu's thank you letter made it so worthwhile. Doing this gave us great joy,” says Mrs Stark. “He needed a chance. We regard him as one of our sons, and our boys have had a chance, so why shouldn’t he? We are grateful to World Vision, who has enabled us to sponsor children and be part of their families for over 26 years.” |
