Another dimension A sponsor’s gift to a struggling family began with a chance sighting in a Malawian village.
Mary spent two-and-a-half hours talking, eating and playing frisbee and soccer with Macdonald and his sisters. She later accompanied other people in her travel group to visit a sponsored child in another village. It was then that she spied something that got her thinking. “I saw a treadle Singer sewing machine, which the sponsor had bought for the family. I knew that if we bought one for Martha and Lucy and paid for their tuition, they would be able to make clothes and sell them to people in their village. It would help them become self-sufficient.” When Mary returned home, she made enquiries with World Vision about making a donation, and in October 2003 Martha became the proud owner of a sewing machine. The donation paid for the machine, a tailoring course for Martha, basic toiletries, cooking ingredients and maize. There was money left over, which Macdonald banked for future supplies or training. Macdonald’s long thank you letter arrived in November 2003. It is plain he and his sisters are overwhelmed by the generosity of their New Zealand sponsors, and he leaves the McFarlanes in no doubt about its effect. “I am really very thankful for what you have done for me and the family as a whole,” he wrote, “ because this will take us from one dimension to another.” |
