Sleep easy

When Wesley’s parents passed away in 2002, this brave young man rose to the challenge of caring for his remaining family members, but the difficulties he faced kept him awake at night.

Wesley and his siblings can sleep easy
in their new house.
A year after Wesley’s parents died, he felt he had no choice but to drop out of school. He had four younger siblings and a chronically ill older sister to care for.

Life was tough for this young family, but Wesley was willing to do anything to look after his siblings. With no job skills or money to invest in starting a business, he found labouring jobs wherever he could, but barely earned enough to provide food for six hungry mouths. There were always expenses he couldn’t meet – school supplies, clothes, medicines for his older sister all had to be done without. The poor condition of the family’s house was an added worry – in the rainy season the roof leaked, and constant draught brought health problems for all of them.

After coming across the family, a Blantyre Urban Area Development Programme (ADP) committee member asked World Vision to assist Wesley and improve the situation of his family. To meet the immediate problem of the house, the ADP provided corrugated iron roofing and cement to repair the walls, and friends and neighbours chipped in to put it all together. Soon the house was weather tight!

World Vision also arranged vocational-skills training for Wesley and helped him establish a small business from which he could earn a regular living to support his siblings.

With this support, the family’s situation has undergone a complete change. The business is doing well and Wesley earns enough money to meet his family’s needs for food, school requirements and more, and when everyone gets home at night they can all sleep easy, knowing they are safe from the weather.
