The following are some achievements in Blantyre Urban Area Development Programme (ADP). Since October 2004 World Vision has:

Health
  • Supplied deworming medication for nearly 1,900 children.
  • Held cholera awareness meetings in all 18 villages of the ADP and distributed chlorine for water to 16,000 families to help prevent an outbreak.
  • Treated 84 cases of cholera. This low number indicates that the prevention activities are having a positive effect.
  • Trained 32 members of village health committees to construct sanitary latrines and educate people about building a household latrine.
  • Distributed first aid supplies to nine primary schools.
Education
  • Provided school uniforms for 150 primary school pupils to improve their attendance.
  • Supported 17 secondary school students with stationery, school uniforms and shoes.
  • Assisted 120 secondary school students with school fees.
  • Awarded school bags to the top five students in each class. More than 140 children received bags.
  • Received a donation of 600 textbooks, which were given to the libraries of two primary schools.
  • Celebrated with a sponsored child who gained a Diploma in Business Administration and two others who performed extremely well in their University entrance exams.
Infrastructure
  • Constructed a foot bridge across the stream in Matope village.
  • Completed construction of a two-classroom block at Ndirande primary school and provided 40 two-seater school desks for the new classrooms.
Special assistance
  • Provided materials to assist community members to construct homes for four needy sponsored children and their families.
  • Supplied clothes for 450 sponsored children.
  • Provided clothes and bedding for the family of a sponsored child who’s home was burgled.
Economic development
  • Supported nine young people to attend vocational training courses.
  • Distributed small low-interest loans to 600 people. There was a 100 per cent repayment record during the financial year.
  • Entered into a memorandum of understanding with Finance Trust for the Self Employed (World Vision Malawi’s parallel micro-finance institution) to manage micro-finance activities in Blantyre Urban ADP.
Leadership development
  • Trained 14 members of the ADP Executive Committee in leadership skills and management of a Community-Based Organisation.
  • Trained eight members of the home-based care committees to counsel and care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Held an internal audit of the ADP.
