Since October 2005, Blantyre Urban Area Development Programme (ADP) has:

    Health and sanitation
  • Constructed a shallow well and repaired two other wells, which has quickly reduced the incidence of water-borne disease
  • Trained 36 people to construct improved latrines
  • Held monthly cholera awareness meetings
  • Surveyed nutrition levels in children under 5 in the communities; 102 children identified as malnourished were registered and provided with high-energy food
  • Stocked the first aid kits in nine primary schools; this will reduce absenteeism caused by illness

  • Education
  • Provided 1,200 library books for nine schools
  • Provided 180 two-seat desks for two primary schools
  • Assisted 132 students with school fees and 100 students with school uniforms
  • Awarded prizes to the best-performing students
  • Held four career guidance talks in schools
  • Held meetings with parents to encourage education and sharing of the cost of school fees
  • Assisted 18 teenagers to attend vocational-training classes
  • Celebrated National Education Day by creating awareness of girls’ rights to education

  • Economic development
  • Supported 33 village banks, which provided small loans for 900 people to start or expand their small businesses

  • Leadership development
  • Trained members of two community-based organisations in development management and registered the organisations with the government
  • Trained 18 community leaders to manage development activities
