Since October 2006, Blantyre Urban Area Development Programme (ADP) has:

A community-based organisation has
been established to run this vocational
training centre.
    Health and sanitation
  • Held monthly meetings to educate community members about health topics including food handling, personal hygiene, using sanitary latrines and disposing of rubbish appropriately
  • Trained 30 health committee members to make latrine construction materials
  • Trained 58 water committee members in well maintenance and hygienic use of water
  • Constructed and protected a well that now provides water for 800 people
  • Provided chlorine for village health committees to distribute to families
  • Education
  • Provided first aid supplies for nine primary schools
  • Facilitated eight secondary school graduates to join training courses in automotive mechanics, accounting and marketing
  • Awarded prizes for top achieving students

  • Economic development
  • Trained 24 people to teach others about small-business management
  • Trained 60 people in small-business management
  • Provided small-business loans for community members to establish or expand income-generating activities
  • Leadership development
  • Trained 18 village leaders to educate their communities about HIV and AIDS
  • Facilitated the formation of two community-based organisations and assisted them to register with the city council; there are now six of them
  • Trained 48 members of community-based organisations in project management
  • Trained eight local committees in financial skills
