Volunteer spirit
Without the selfless dedication of community-minded individuals, taking care of the many AIDS orphans in Malawi’s Blantyre City would be impossible.

Women from an Orphan Care Committee in the Blantyre Area Development Programme (ADP) are an example of this volunteer spirit.
The committee approached World Vision for a NZ$350 loan to purchase a weaving loom. They wanted to make items for sale and use the proceeds to help approximately 5000 AIDS orphans with food, medicine and hospital fees.
The women have drawn up a six-shift roster, working the loom from 7am to 4.30pm, six days a week. They make tea towels, which they sell locally, and sometimes blankets and sheets for the orphans, but gain no financial benefit themselves. Their motivation goes much deeper than that.
“Fifteen of the 36 women on the committee have lost their husbands, mostly to HIV/AIDS,” says Don Lord, World Vision’s South Island Territory Manager, who met committee members when he visited Blantyre Urban ADP in October 2003.
“Their devotion, commitment and love for children in need within their community is very humbling,” he says.
