Plenty to smile about
A dairy cow provided by World Vision has given Josephy Manda Banda plenty to smile about.
|
Each first-born calf is passed on
to another farmer.
|
In 2006, Josephy took part in a World Vision training course that taught him how to keep dairy cows, and built a shelter for his cow. There were smiles all round on August 31, 2006, when the cow finally arrived.
In March 2007, much to Josephy’s pleasure, his cow bore a calf and began to produce milk. His four children were pleased too when they had their first taste of the fresh milk it produces. Josephy milks his cow twice a day, keeping three litres for his growing children and selling the rest to neighbours.
The milk has been great for the family’s health, as have the nutritious foods they can now afford. They have also been able to purchase new clothes and even a bicycle. The next planned purchase is an ox cart to transport the cow’s manure to Josephy’s fields, and he is saving for this at the local World Vision-established community bank.
It is not just Josephy’s family who are getting joy from his cow – he has passed his first-born calf on to another family, one of the conditions of the project.
From its presence to its products, Josephy’s cow has given him plenty to smile about!
