The following are some of Chata ADP’s achievements since January 2004:

Cassava is improving lives in Chata.
Food security
  • Assisted 3,297 farmers to grow different types of crops including Irish potato, beans and cassava so they don’t depend solely on maize.
  • Taught 1,171 farmers to make and apply compost to their gardens to reduce dependence on expensive chemical fertilisers.
  • Trained 65 representatives of an agricultural co-operative to market crops for higher profits. The co-operative has 1,219 members.
  • Trained 715 farmers in agro-forestry, established 140 tree nurseries and planted 303,890 acacia trees to conserve the environment, reduce soil loss through erosion and to use as firewood.
Health
  • Trained 120 community health workers in the prevention of common diseases and to encourage the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
  • Conducted a refresher course for 23 traditional birth attendants.
  • Held health campaigns in 56 villages to improve hygiene.
HIV/AIDS
  • Established ten community groups to support and care for people with HIV/AIDS and trained 20 home-based caregivers to provide adequate care for the chronically ill in their communities.
  • Trained 25 young people as peer educators to promote behavioural change.
Education
  • Supported 152 sponsored children with school fees and distributed 6,209 exercise books to primary school students.
  • Supplied 120 desks, four tables and eight teachers’ chairs to improve the learning conditions at primary schools.
  • Trained 15 literacy instructors, distributed 100 literacy books and taught three adult literacy classes to 316 people.
  • Renovated a school block and two teachers’ houses.
