Snippets
Since October 2005, Chata Area Development Programme (ADP) has:
Health and sanitation
- Established 12 model villages where community members practise good health and sanitation initiatives; 74 nearby villages have begun implementing the initiatives and all have been awarded model village status
- Facilitated distribution of vitamin A and worming medication
- Provided 1,000 insecticide-treated mosquito nets to community members at a subsidised price; health centre records show a reduction in malaria cases
- Provided family planning information including more than 1,000 brochures
- Supplied 24 traditional birth attendants with materials
HIV and AIDS
- Held nine HIV and AIDS awareness campaigns
- Supplied 8,000 copies of HIV and AIDS literature for 18 organisations and 15 primary schools
- Provided eight home-based care groups with maize seed, fertiliser, home-based care kits and general medicines
- Formed a community-led care coalition for all AIDS-focused community-based organisations, faith-based organisations, non-governmental organisations and government departments can meet and discuss strategy
Water and sanitation
- Constructed 10 shallow wells, benefiting 1,500 people
- Trained 10 water and sanitation committees to maintain pumps
- Distributed 150kg of chlorine for water treatment; 4,200 families benefited
- Educated the community about how to prevent water-borne disease by boiling water, and proper rubbish disposal
Education
- Supported 125 secondary school students with school fees
- Provided school bags for all school-going sponsored children
Agriculture and food security
- Trained 110 farmers to care for dairy cattle
- Provided dairy cattle for 30 farmers
- Trained 80 farmers to raise improved breeds of goats
- Provided 10 farmers with piglets of an improved breed, and trained them to store maize bran to feed the pigs in the hungry season
- Established a revolving veterinary medicine fund for the piggery project
- Trained 100 farmers to multiply maize seed, because selling maize seed is more profitable than selling maize for food
- Provided farmers with nearly 600kg of maize seed and 600 litres of fertiliser
- Trained 400 farmers in improved methods of growing bananas
- Trained 100 farmers to keep bees
Leadership development
- Trained 102 ADP committee members in leadership and management skills, child protection and HIV and AIDS
