Achievements

Since October 2006, Chata Area Development Programme (ADP) has:

    Health and sanitation

  • Educated 1,300 mothers about breast-feeding and diarrhoea treatment
  • Continued to support nine revolving medicine funds

  • HIV and AIDS

  • Supported community-based childcare centres to assist 850 orphaned and vulnerable children and 75 people living with HIV and AIDS; Support included food for midday meals at the centres, vegetable seeds and insecticide-treated mosquito nets to give to the families
  • Facilitated monthly support groups for people living with HIV and AIDS
  • Trained 120 primary school teachers to teach their students values-based life skills
  • Supported 90 teenage HIV and AIDS peer educators to form a youth club
  • Trained 20 youth leaders and 20 church leaders about HIV and AIDS so they can encourage their churches to support affected families

  • Education

  • Raised awareness of the importance of education for girls
  • Renovated Chata Primary School

  • Agriculture and economic development

  • Provided an improved variety of maize seed for 800 farmers and taught them about composting
  • Trained leaders of the Root and Tuber Association in financial management
  • Established a livestock co-operative
  • Provided 71 farmers with dairy cows
  • Facilitated two dairy farmers to attend a course on artificial insemination
  • Trained 28 farmers to keep pigs and provided them with pigs
  • Provided goats, pigs and cattle for the families of 280 sponsored children
  • Trained 200 families in fish farming

  • Leadership development

  • Trained 16 traditional village leaders in child rights so they can educate their communities
  • Facilitated 31 development committee members to visit two other ADPs to learn from their experiences

Challenges

The people of Chata still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on preparing community leadership to facilitate their community’s development.
