Zakeyo’s farm
Zakeyo Golowa has discovered that irrigated farming brings many benefits.
A subsistence farmer who struggled to make ends meet, three years ago Zakeyo joined Vumbu irrigation club. This club was established by World Vision to assist farmers from Chata to grow nutritious, but thirsty, crops such as vegetables and maize.
Applying what he has learned through the club, Zakeyo irrigates his crops – he can now grow two crops of maize each year and has started to diversify into high-value produce such as chillies.
The benefits are obvious: his family no longer have empty stomachs in the hungry season and they now have a source of income from selling their surplus crops. Zakeyo is also able to support two of his children through secondary education.
