Dairy delight

Mrs Kameko is doing very well as a dairy farmer, and credits her success to the assistance of World Vision.

Cows provide nutrition and income.
In January 2006, World Vision established a milk bulking group in Mikolongwe. Through the group, Mrs Kameko and 139 other farmers learned about dairy farming. They each received a dairy cow on a revolving loan basis, which required them to pass their first calf on to another family.

World Vision has continued to support the group, teaching farmers to supplement feed to increase production, and training 11 of its members to be artificial insemination technicians and providing them with equipment and bicycles.

By applying the dairy farming techniques she has learned, Mrs Kameko is obtaining plenty of milk from her cow. Her eight children benefit from the milk and from the improved family financial status that results from sales. As well as paying for her children’s school supplies – two of the children are in secondary school and the others in primary – Mrs Kameko has used income from selling milk to buy corrugated iron roofing for her family home.

“I owe all this success to World Vision who provided training and linked my group with the advice of the Ministry of Agriculture. In the future I expect to achieve even better things from my farming.”
