Achievements

Since October 2006, Mikolongwe Area Development Programme (ADP) has:

    HIV and AIDS

  • Trained 45 teachers to teach values-based life skills and HIV prevention
  • Supported 300 students to attend secondary school and 20 to attend vocational training centres
  • Trained 25 teenage peer educators in life planning skills
  • Trained 27 youth choirs, bands and drama groups to spread messages about HIV and AIDS prevention and care
  • Continued to support 26 youth clubs
  • Trained 30 church leaders about HIV and AIDS so they can encourage their congregations to support affected families
  • Provided food for 16 community-based childcare centres; 1,800 preschoolers are supported by the centres
  • Trained 37 childcare teachers to make nutritious food for their students
  • Provided fortified flour for home-based care committees

  • Education

  • Supported inter-school quizzes and essay writing competitions
  • Provided mock examinations

  • Agriculture

  • Trained 1,298 farmers in composting, seed multiplication and reforestation
  • Trained 11 farmers in artificial insemination so they can help other farmers with their cattle breeding
  • Provided goats for 950 families
  • Provided 1,000 households with farm inputs
  • Established 20 community tree nurseries to help reforest the area and provided them with inputs; more than 60,000 seedlings are being raised
  • Established six nurseries where people living with HIV and AIDS can obtain trees with medicinal properties

  • Leadership development

  • Trained 94 community leaders in leadership and participatory management
  • Training 34 members of six community-based organisations in financial management

Challenges

The people of Mikolongwe still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on increasing awareness of HIV and AIDS, motivating the community to support people affected by HIV and AIDS, improving the livelihoods of community members and building the capacity of leaders to meet community needs.
