Trying it out

Initial indications from a pilot project in Mikolongwe ADP promise success.

If successful, solar-irrigated vegetables will
be a nutritions addition to diets.
Mikolongwe ADP has been selected to trial solar-powered irrigation systems. So far systems have been installed in three villages, involving 100 people. Because there are no streams in these villages and little rainfall, locals have very little diversity in their diets and lack nutrients.

The solar-powered systems harness the sun’s energy to draw and distribute groundwater to irrigate vegetable gardens, especially crops of tomatoes and onions. Each family is allocated a small plot to grow their vegetables and trained by World Vision in vegetable gardening. World Vision provides seeds, fertiliser and pesticides to help with the first crop. Not only will this improve people’s diets, it will also increase their incomes through the sale of vegetables.

Committees have been established to run the affairs of each site and the farmers have been linked with agricultural officers from the Ministry of Agriculture.

Look out for more information on this project as it extends to other villages.
