Keep it clean
Water-borne diseases are one of the main health problems in Koro ADP and diarrhoea accounts for 38 percent of reported illnesses among children. Clearly, the issue of hygiene and sanitation education is of utmost importance.
People are learning about the importance of clean water.
This is one of the reasons that Koro ADP helps the community form water and sanitation committees. There are now 109 of these committees, 91 of which have been formed in the last three years.
The committees, which each have 7-10 members, learn about the importance of clean water and proper sanitation and how to prevent malaria and water-borne diseases. They are responsible for drafting and administering hygiene and sanitation rules in their villages, such as keeping the areas around wells clear of animal manure. Their efforts at community education are backed up by periodic radio campaigns.
Well digging, which World Vision does in partnership with the commune (contributes five percent of the cost) and the community (contributes labour), reinforces community spirit. In the process, people also learn valuable technical and project management skills such as how to determine required well depth and suitable location, liaise with partner agencies and monitor project progress.
