Closing the door

Seven communities with large weekly markets have been the focus of an AIDS education campaign in Koro ADP this year.

Children participated in the education campaign.
The theme of ‘Operation Hope’ campaign was ‘Closing the migration door’. It raised awareness of the risk of migrant workers spreading the HIV virus on return to their home villages.

A trained team of World Vision workers, health centre staff and community representatives ran the campaign, which featured talks from two people living with AIDS. The team distributed T-shirts, caps, posters, pens and calendars with AIDS prevention messages. Follow-up radio announcements extended the message to all 73 communities in Koro ADP.

“Migrant workers have brought many cases into our communities,” says Yava Poudiougou, the chief of one of the villages targeted in the campaign. “We should pay attention when a relative returns, especially when he returns sick. I hope people now understand and that they will change their behaviour if they don’t want to die.”
